Introduction to the basic functions of geosynthetics

The basic functions of geosynthetic materials are described as follows.

Drainage: Geosynthetics act as a drainage body inside the soil, which allows water to drain from the low permeability soil along its interior. For example: Geotextiles laid at the bottom of embankments can be used to dissipate pore water pressure.

Filtration: This function of geosynthetic material is similar to that of traditional sand filter layer, allowing liquid inside the soil body to pass through and be dispatched, while acting as soil retention and stopping the loss of soil particles upstream. For example: spun geotextiles are used to stop the migration of soil particles from seeping into the drainage aggregate or drainage pipe, while keeping the drainage system working properly.

Isolation: This function refers to the ability of geosynthetic materials to isolate two coatings with different particle size distributions so that they do not mix with each other and lose their respective integrity and structural integrity. Both geotextile fabric and geomembrane can play the role of isolation.

Reinforcement: geosynthetic materials are placed inside the soil as reinforcing members, or geosynthetic materials are combined with the soil to form a composite body, and the strength and deformation performance of the reinforced composite soil body is significantly improved compared with the un-reinforced soil body.

Anti-seepage: Some geosynthetic materials have relatively low permeability, which can stop the flow and diffusion of liquid or gas and play the role of anti-seepage or inclusion.

Protection: also known as soil and water conservation, is to reduce soil loss caused by rainfall impact and surface water runoff by setting geosynthetic material protection measures.
